Unauthorized vehicle use and illegal dumping in District Open Space
Dumping of yard debris including tree limbs in open space is strictly prohibited and
should be reported to the DC Sheriffs Department (303) 660-7505. The recent snow storm
caused considerable damage to area trees both on private property and in District open space.
It will likely take several weeks for the District property manager and our contract arborist to
cut, gather and remove all the damaged and broken tree limbs. Homeowners are asked to
dispose of broken branches from their own property by hauling them to the Douglas County
Slash/Mulch site in Castle Rock (site opens April 6th). https://www.douglas.co.us/public-works/

Motorized vehicle use in Metro District open space is prohibited. Vehicles such as
motorcycles, ATV’s, snow machines (Skidoo’s), golf carts, scooters and electric bikes are not
permitted in District open space. Recently ATV/ 4-wheelers have been observed accessing
District open space following recent snow storms, particularly in the area adjacent to S. Pinery
Parkway and Democrat Rd. and open space along Timbers Creek. Electric bikes are also
wandering off trails into open space causing damage.
Open space parcels were dedicated during the subdivision planning process to provide a
natural, undisturbed buffer between houses by allowing native vegetation including trees,
shrubs and grasses to create a vegetative buffer between properties. Recreational vehicles
damage the soil and native vegetation and allow invasive weeds and plants to take over.
Vehicles can create “lasting scars” that can take years to recover. Noise from vehicles also
disturb residents and neighbors. Unauthorized vehicles in open should be reported to the
Douglas County Sheriffs Department. Unauthorized users can be cited for criminal trespass
and held liable for damages. To assist the Sheriffs department, take note of the vehicle’s
description, its origin, address and plate number if available.
